Given a mutual interest between Hanger label boss Claire Davis and photographer Christopher Fowler on the collection’s founding influences, namely the Sukeban films of the 80s and the “Kung-Fu, sci-fi and horror”, Fowler has produced a series of images and videos to visualise the collection’s referential history and homage to an era that forms a large part of both his own and many other young creative’s upbringings – an influence that is becoming clearer with the popularity of artists like Rina Sawayama and a surge of anime influenced fashion, film and music in recent years.

Shot over two days a month apart, performances are edited into a video that acts as a TV intro to a fictional HANGER Sukeban series, with heavy influence from movies like Lady Snowblood, Takashi Miike’s oeuvre and Sukeban Deka, along with classic golden age anime Gundam, Cat’s Eyes and of course Dragonball. Named after the SEASON 7 SPRING DEMON collection; the intro is a mixture of live action and animated stills, matched frame to beat to the soundtrack and the result of Fowler’s obsession with anime and movie intro credit sequences, which are almost a form in themselves in the combination of music and visuals. Along with the main intro is a series of quick character videos of the kind found before and after anime advert breaks, and a collection of graphic posters that now plaster the skyscrapers of HANGER CITY on the brand website. With this project Fowler intended to bring through the collection’s cinematic history and present his interpretation of the clothes, which themselves throw colourful and dramatic silhouettes that transform the wearer into a bōsōzoku girl, fire wielding latex witch or four-armed demon boss.
