HUDSON JEANS STARRING KAIA GERBER & GABRIEL-KANE DAY-LEWIS FALL 2017 AD CAMPAIGN

BY DORIS ABAIWEH

For their Fall 2017 ad campaign Hudson once again enlisted creative director David Lipman of Lipman Studio to bring their narrative to life. Lensed by legend Patrick Demarchelier the creative duo recruited up-and-coming talents, Kaia Gerber and Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis. If their faces look familiar, that may be because the young talents come from rather illustrious parents. Gerber is the doppelgänger of her supermodel mother, Cindy Crawford. While Day-Lewis is the son of English actor Daniel Day-Lewis and French actress Isabelle Adjani.

The Impression caught up with Lipman who explained, “I met Peter Kim almost a decade ago and he shared the ethos of the brand he founded, the freedom of expression from Heathrow to the imitation zone, London to Los Angeles. Playing with these youthful codes of expression we went down the road of rock and royalty and cast Georgia May Jagger for the first campaign followed by Patrick Shwarzenegger. As the brand evolved Hudson’s new President, Matthew Fior, recognized that core and we continued on the same journey casting Kaia Gerber and Gabriel-Kane Day Lewis. Both royalty in there own right, but willing to play a part in our expression of royalty without pretense.”

That royalty is still relatively underexposed in the fashion eco-system with Gerber, who will be 16 in a few weeks, having just done her first campaign, Chrome Hearts, last year. While Day-Lewis, 22, has logged just a few more miles doing work with Calvin Klein, Coach and walking Chanel’s runway in 2015.

We just took it natural and let them act organically in front of the camera. Both are naturals. I chose Patrick Demarchelier because of my long and great friendship with him. And our past work with Cindy Crawford, Kaia’s mom. Plus I’ve always had a love affair with Patrick’s iconic pictures. And that was the assignment. Iconic images that didn’t try. Effortless….The imperfect moments that create magic.

– David Lipman, Chief Creative Officer – Lipman Studio

The magic was augmented in the refined art direction and color grading used to accent the denim blues which drip with a refinement we appreciate here at The Impression. Both Demarchelier and Lipman know their way around a well told story that is more than simply a model in a studio. And that is the real magic no matter who the talent, storytelling.
