On the occasion of Barry McGee’s solo show at the New York gallery Cheim & Reid, from January 4 to February 17, 2018 (see photos here), a 70-page catalog has been published. The book presents a real visual collage of recent works by the Californian artist. There are reproductions of drawings and canvases with abstract backgrounds composed of geometric patterns and shapes in bright and garish colors, inspired by Mexican muralists, his famous faces borrowed from the world of cartoon, as well as many photographs taken by McGee and his friends. This book highlights the vitality of Barry McGee’s work, which continues to criticize advertising, the American way of life and the consumer society in general. The artist / essayist Katya Tylevich creates for the occasion an original text that describes the timeless quality of her work, places it in a contemporary context and questions its meaning and depth. This beautiful book is now available on the online store of the Cheim & Reid Gallery.
