NEW YORK — Since the passing of Oscar de la Renta in nearly three years, the house bearing his name has gone through changes. This is of course understandable given the decades of history at stake, but it was only a matter of time until the creative momentum of Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia propelled this house into the future. Last season’s debut suffered under the weight of an overly complicated runway set up in which Kim and Garcia, also the creatives behind Monse, paired the staging of the collections one after the other. This season for Oscar de la Renta, however the charted course looks clear, and judging by the sole showing Monday afternoon at Sotheby’s, their Spring 2018 collection ought to generate waves of its own. This was a modern take for the house, which took cues from the storied art brokerage founded in London in 1744. The graphic splashes of paint and lettering, which went the distance at modernizing the considerable heritage of the house. There surely is still more to be done in this regard, but on the balance the future looks bright indeed. On the afternoon, eight models from across the Next global network walked in the runway show including Lia Pavlova, Odette Pavlova, Maria Clara, Katlin Aas, Grace Elizabeth, Leila Goldkuhl, Blanca Padilla, and Lineisy Montero.
