So let’s say you’re Paul McCartney and you’re charged with being the headliner of this year’s inaugural Desert Trip festival. What could you do to make it better; to make it more of a once-in-a-lifetime performance? The answer is clearly including Rihanna, which is precisely what went down over the weekend.
RiRi joined the Macca on stage for a performance of “FourFiveSeconds,” the track originally written with Kanye West and a song that has, funnily enough, yet to be included on any of these artists’ full-length albums. Since Kanye West is busy with his own Saint Pablo tour, it was up to McCartney to sing all of West’s verses of the song, a task that given his previous musical expertise was well within his abilities. Rihanna slays obviously, and reminds us that loose-fitting pinstripe suits are her secret weapon.
The Desert Trip festival was created this year to showcase the world of rock music’s last living legends. Other than McCartney, the weekend’s lineup included the likes of The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and The Who. And considering McCartney’s savvy inclusion of Ri, it’s safe to assume that he’s still the coolest of the bunch.
