LONDON — First, some history. Ports 1961 was founded in Toronto in the year, wait for it, 1961 by Canadian fashion designer Luke Tanabe. Then the luxury label was largely in the business of importing silk from Japan. Seafaring and the bounty springing from it have been at the hear of this label ever since is creation. Fast forward several decades to the appointment of Nataša Čagalj as its womenswear creative director in 2014 and her commitment to the brand’s heritage remains steadfast. It certainly was Saturday afternoon at St. James’s for Čagalj’s women’s spring collection, where travel was the point of departure. There were playful, even naive elements throughout the collection, from embroidered lavender details to girlish pleats. These artisanal “uniforms” borrowed from a variety of cultures, which when fused together made a distinctive statement in an open embrace of the wider world. On the afternoon five models from across the Next global network featured in the runway show including Danielle Lashley, Odette Pavlova, Jay Wright, Moira Berntz, and Lea Issarni.
